General Edwards Drawbridge Median Barrier Replacement and Bridge Maintenance

August 19, 2025

VIA MASSDOT - REVERE/LYNN – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will install a center median work zone on North Shore Road (Route 1A) in Revere and Lynn, across the General Edwards Drawbridge. This work zone will allow contractors to remove and replace the existing center median barrier, and complete additional bridge maintenance work. These activities are scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 17, and the work zone is expected to remain in place with construction activities continuing through the remainder of the 2025 construction season.

The work zone will extend from approximately where Lynnway meets North Shore Road in Revere, across the General Edwards Drawbridge, to Hanson Street in Lynn. This work zone will reduce North Shore Road (Route 1A) northbound to one lane while crossing the bridge. Southbound traffic will remain two lanes. The median replacement limits will include the bridge approaches and the barrier crossing the bridge.

Construction will take place during overnight hours to start, on weeknights, Sunday evening through Friday morning, from 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning, with intermittent temporary lane closures on North Shore Road (Route 1A) southbound. As the project progresses, work will transition to daytime hours in the center median work zone, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This construction activity is expected to continue through 2025.

To allow crews to conduct this work, temporary weeknight lane closures may be necessary at the following locations:

  • North Shore Road (Route 1A) southbound, between Hanson Street in Lynn and the Lynnway ramps in Revere, crossing the General Edwards Drawbridge.

Appropriate signage and law enforcement details will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.

Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
