April 8, 2015

Revere – The City of Revere and Mayor Daniel Rizzo are pleased to announce that the “Revere Citywide Free Fitness Challenge” is slated to kick-off on May 11, 2015 and will run for five weeks ending on June 10, 2015. The 5K Race which signifies the end of the challenge is being held on June 13, 2015.

The annual Fitness Challenge is designed to highlight the benefits of healthy eating and fitness. It also demonstrates how important health and exercise is, while showing residents that it can also be fun and exciting. All classes for the Fitness Challenge will be offered during the week at either the Susan B. Anthony School gymnasium, or at a various participating business. Weekend classes will meet at the beach or walk the Urban Trails. This will be our fourth year in sponsoring this challenge and the event organizers, Jodi Reath and Sean Mallet, are more excited than ever about some of the changes to the program. Prizes will be awarded to the top three weight loss winners which will include a 50” LED TV, a Kindle Fire, and a Fitness Basket.

The 5K Race will take place on June 13, 2015 at 9:00 A.M. at the Whelan School. Pre-registration for the race will be $20.00 and same day registration will be $25.00. The cost for Revere students and Immaculate Conception students will be $5.00. Last year’s race drew over 200 runners and race organizers, Julie DeMauro and Dr. Ann Marie Costa, are hoping to attract more race participants from across Revere and beyond. If you would like to learn more about the race, please email Julie at julie_demauro@hotmail.com.

Mayor Rizzo stated that, “This is a great way for our residents to participate in various fitness activities all while promoting good health and having fun.”

About the Revere City Wide Fitness Challenge and 5K Race:

The Revere City Wide Fitness Challenge was first initiated by Jodi Reath and Sean Mallet, owners of Millions of Muscles Fitness, in order to promote health and wellness in Revere. Revere on the Move, Revere CARES, the Revere Recreation Department, Mayor Rizzo’s Office, Revere Public Schools, and numerous health and wellness businesses collaborate each year in order to continue the Fitness Challenge. The challenge has been very successful in highlighting some of the important health and wellness businesses in Revere along with giving residents a free way to exercise and become healthy. In the Spring of 2013, Julie DeMauro, Safe Routes to School Coordinator of Walk Boston, and Dr. Ann Marie Costa, former Revere Public Schools Deputy Superintendent, joined the group and helped to organize the first Revere Runs 5K Race. The goal of this collaboration is to promote health and wellness for the residents of Revere. Proceeds from the 5K Race will go towards scholarships for Revere High School Seniors.
