- How does my municipal retirement allowance affect my Social Security benefits?
Your municipal retirement allowance may affect your Social Security benefits in one of two ways: The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which may reduce your Social Security benefits based upon your own work history, or the Government Pension Offset, which may reduce Social Security benefits to which you may be entitled under your spouse's work history. The following links contain information about the offsets, and have calculators to approximate the amount of the potential reductions.
