Press Release 01/16/2007
CITY FIRE HYDRANTS ARE GIVEN A NEW LOOK
As you drive through the city, the newly refurbished fire hydrants provide a welcome change. Residents have been positively commenting on the improved condition of these hydrants and on their positive impact on the appearance of the City of Revere.
The Revere Beautification Committee has joined forces with Mayor Tom Ambrosino and Revere Fire Chief Gene Doherty in an effort to paint every fire hydrant in the city. Under the direction of Revere Fire Lt. Robert Fortuna, a crew of prisoners sanded and painted approximately 95 hydrants throughout the city this fall. The hydrants that were painted are located on Broadway, Beach Street, Revere Street, Park Avenue and Revere Beach Boulevard from Eliot Circle to Revere Street. The Revere Beautification Committee provided materials for this project.
There are between 800 and 900 fire hydrants in the city and 90% remain in need of updating. This project will continue in the spring under the direction of the Revere Fire Department. The RBC will continue to provide the materials necessary to complete this project.
Since its establishment a little over four years ago, the Revere Beautification Committee, working closely with the City of Revere, has been instrumental in the implementation of the following:
· the installation of more than 100 litter barrels throughout the city
· the installation of banners along Broadway
· the adoption of islands by various businesses throughout the city
· the initial work to spruce up the median strip on Squire Road
· the installation of flowers on Broadway and Shirley Avenue
· the city-wide sweeping program
· the monitoring of local properties through a reporting system that results in a cleaner environment and garners additional revenue for the City through fines for non-compliant offenders
· the planting and weeding of the flower beds along Revere Beach
· the painting of fire hydrants throughout the City
· community clean-ups of Revere Beach
Our future plans include:
· beautify the veteran memorials throughout the City
· expand the flower program on Revere Beach
· continue our work on Squire Road
· expand the adopt-an-island program throughout the City
With the funds that we have raised through the banner program and through the barrel program, we have paid for the following:
· the landscaping and maintenance of Revere City Hall
· the adoption of an island in Beachmont
· the clean up and maintenance of Centennial Park
· the barrels in front of City Hall
· the planting and maintenance of flowers on Revere Beach
· the planting and maintenance of flowers in Doris Park
· power washing of pavilions on Revere Beach
· the Carey Circle landscaping
· maintenance work on the Squire Road median strip
· some of the new street signs that were installed in the City.
The Committee thought that you would like to know what we have been doing with the funds that have been raised from projects such as the Banner Program. We urge you to support us in our efforts to improve the image of the City of Revere.
