Mayor Arrigo enhances Substance Use Disorder Initiatives (SUDI) Office as part of strategy to address addiction; formal launch on October 27

October 19, 2016

Upon taking office, Mayor Brian Arrigo declared that tackling substance abuse in Revere is one of his administration's top priorities. Through his leadership, the City of Revere formalized and enhanced the SUD Initiatives (SUDI) Office, increasing staff capacity to address drug addiction in our community.

SUDI has also opened a new office space at 437 Revere Street. As a result, SUDI is positioned to streamline existing efforts and strengthen ongoing work to address addiction in our community.

“Our commitment to address substance abuse in Revere needs to go beyond just words,” said Mayor Brian Arrigo. “We need to take real steps that will make a positive impact in our community. Adding more staff dedicated to overseeing the city’s work on substance abuse and empowering them to make systems changes in Revere will help us move toward our goal of saving lives from the scourge of addiction.”

SUDI's goal is to develop and improve SUD-related policies and systems for those most affected by drug addiction. This includes implementing activities across the continuum of care - prevention, intervention, and recovery.

Current outreach efforts include the City's weekly Drop-In Center, which was previously located at 265 Beach Street. As a result of SUDI's expansion, the Drop-In Center is now held at the new office on Revere Street on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. The Drop-In Center is staffed by community health workers and peer recovery coaches. Likewise, through SUDI's collaboration with the Revere Police and Revere Fire Department, there is at least one police officer and firefighter present. Drop-In Center hours are a way for residents to learn more about resources available to help them fight addiction.

The SUDI office is also working in conjunction with the Police and Fire department to gather data on addiction in the community and coordinate the City’s response when overdoses take place.

SUDI invites all residents to its formal launch event taking place on Thursday, October 27th at 1:00 PM. The event will include an open house to offer residents the opportunity to meet the staff members, learn about SUDI's work, and ask questions about the existing efforts underway.
