Mayor Announces Implementation of Elderly & Disabled Taxation Fund
& Relief on Water Bills for Disabled Residents
Mayor Thomas G. Ambrosino is pleased to announce that applications for grants
from the "Elderly & Disabled Taxation Fund" and the newly established "Water and Sewer
Relief Funds for Disabled Residences" will be available in the City Treasurer's Office on
the 2nd Floor of City Hall beginning May 28, 2009. The Fund is sustained by voluntary
contribution from taxpayers who respond to the pink donation card included in each
quarterly tax bill. The purpose of the Fund is to provide relief to elderly and/or disabled
taxpayers and disabled rate payers who are finding it difficult to pay their real estate taxes
and water and sewer bills because of financial hardship.
"This is another of the City's tax programs aimed at helping our senior citizens and
other financially vulnerable individuals cope with tax increases," commented Ambrosino.
"I am sure that the Fund will provide welcome relief to seniors and disabled residents on
fixed incomes faced with the burden of paying higher property taxes and water & sewer
rates."
The "Elderly & Disabled Taxation Fund" has been in existence for several years. It
is expected that grants of $250 each will be awarded this year.
In order to qualify for the grant, the taxpayer must be a resident of Revere and meet
the following additional requirements: be 65 years of age or disabled as of July I of the
Fiscal Year; be current with all real estate taxes, have income of no more than $20,000 per
year if single or combined $40,000 per year for joint property owners; have no rental
income. As part of the application, taxpayers should submit a statement of the extenuating
circumstances which create a hardship. The grants will be awarded to the most needy of
applicants as detennined by the Elderly and Disabled Taxation Committee, which is
comprised of the Treasurer and three citizens as required by M.G.L. C. 60, §3D.
For more information regarding the "Elderly & Disabled Taxation Fund," feel free
to contact either the Treasurer's Office at 286-8136. The applications must be returned to
the Treasurer's Office on or before June 26, 2009.
"The City of Revere has a moral duty to assist those seniors and disabled residents
who have a hard time meeting their tax obligation. While the benefits of this Fund are
modest, it will certainly provide some measure of comfort to those who find themselves in
difficult circumstances," concluded the Mayor.
