CITY OF REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS

General

The City of Revere, is located on the eastern coast of Massachusetts, and is bordered by Boston, Winthrop, and Chelsea on the south, Everett and Malden on the west, Saugus and Lynn on the north, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. The City has a population of approximately 42,786 (according to the 1990 Federal Census Report) and occupies a land area of 5.95 square miles. Settled in 1626 and originally a part of Chelsea, Revere was established as a separate town in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1915. It is primarily a residential suburb of Boston.

Form of Government

The City operates under the Plan B form of government with an elected Mayor and an eleven member City Council. Both the Mayor and Council are elected for two year terms. The principal executive officers of the City are as follows:

Municipal Services

The City provides general governmental services for the territory within its boundaries, including police and fire protection, disposal of garbage and rubbish, public education, street maintenance, parks and recreational facilities.

The City is located in Suffolk County, but is not assessed any of the costs of county operations, the County tax being paid in its entirety by the City of Boston. The principal services provided by the County are a jail, house of correction and a registry of deeds. Complete sewer and water services are provided via connections to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).

Relative to the disposal of municipal solid waste, the City of Revere has a service agreement with Refuse Energy Systems Company (RESCO), under which RESCO is required to accept the City's municipal solid waste for disposal at its Saugus Incineration Facility.

Unemployment

According to the Massachusetts Division of Employment preliminary date, in April 1997 the City had a total labor force of 21,170 of which 20,194 were employed and 976 or 4.6% were unemployed as compared with 4.0% for the Commonwealth (unadjusted). Education

The Revere Public School system consists of a total of seven schools: six elementary schools, two of which are K-8, and one high school. There are also two parochial schools located in the City. The Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School District has 1,055 students, approximately 167 of whom are from Revere.

As indicated above, three of the City’s elementary schools are at or above capacity, and there have been some discussions with the State Department of Education regarding the possible construction of a new middle school to house up to 1,200 students. This project may move forward in the next few years and would be eligible for state school building assistance.
